Colorado National Guard

In April 2023, Serve Colorado marked a historic milestone by entering into a first-in-the-nation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Colorado National Guard (CONG). This collaborative MOU was renewed in 2024, and aims to connect two community- and service-driven entities, creating a unique synergy that benefits both Guard and AmeriCorps members. The agreement establishes expanded recruitment channels, fostering increased awareness of career pathways and opportunities for individuals seeking to serve their communities.

In May 2025, the first-ever CONG AmeriCorps wildland fire mitigation crew launched. This pilot marked the first time a state service commission successfully integrated National Guard service with AmeriCorps service in an operational, field-based setting focused on wildfire mitigation and workforce development.

The four-member crew spent the 2025 fire season with Rocky Mountain Youth Corps near Steamboat Springs, Colorado, clearing and thinning forest and constructing slash piles. This work directly improved forest health and reduced wildfire risk during one of the most significant drought periods in recent state history. In addition to environmental impact, the pilot produced strong workforce outcomes: two members secured full-time wildland firefighting positions following their service; one member is using their Segal Education Award to pursue further education and continue along a Common Good career pathway; and the fourth is pursuing placement with a municipal fire department or police department, citing the value of skills development and leadership experience gained through the fire crew. Together, these outcomes demonstrate how national service can serve as a bridge to meaningful, career-aligned pathways while addressing urgent statewide needs.
